Remembering Ray Clemence

Euan Fielder • November 15, 2020

It was so sad to see the news of Ray Clemence passing earlier today - one of those rarities like Pat Jennings who was a legend at two clubs. Yvonne and I met him for the last time back in 2016 and I spoke to him a few times on the phone about possible events - he was a lovely man. This is Yvonne and Ray at the old White Hart Lane stadium #RIPRay

This coming Saturday is the 50th Anniversary of the Ibrox Disaster - a terrible day when five lads from the village where we now live went to a football match and never came back. Sixty six fans died that day, but the five lads from Markinch were schoolboy friends and all lived in two adjoining roads a stone's throw from each other. We didn't live in Markinch at the time, but I have driven past the memorial to them most days for the past 20 years. Even if you have never been to a football match in your life, please try and look at one or the other - and if you, like me, went to so many matches in the 1960s as a teenager - all over the UK - where but for the Grace of God... have a read and a think... Yvonne and I have been to Ibrox hundreds of times, and met and got to know most of the Rangers FC team who played that day, but driving past that memorial and the five trees really puts everything into perspective... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-scotland-55416715 https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/extra/B0cJMZS3B1/Fiveboys

No doubt to the surprise of no-one, we have cancelled our three upcoming events due to the current Coronavirus pandemic. We would like to thank Bud, Colin, Kevin , Colin, Craig and Alex for making themselves available for our functions, and hopefully we can all reconvene at some time in the future when life is back to normal - whenever that may be... In the meantime, everyone stay safe, look out for those who need looking out for, and we will hopefully see you somewhere down the road...
